Materials Steel

We design all our pieces using advanced computational and digital sculpting tools.

Pieces made in steel are 3d printed from layers of stainless steel powder. At first, this powder is held together by a jet printed binding agent. Once printing is complete, the designs are only semi-solid, like a sandcastle. This "sandcastle" is then surrounded with casting material and infused with bronze for structural soundness.

Final pieces have a composition of approximately 60% steel and 40% bronze.

The bronze infusion process is somewhat unpredictable. So the color may vary from piece to piece or have slight irregularities within one piece, regardless of which finish you choose. We feel this is part of the charm of such mad science.

Steel has a subtle surface texture that is reminiscent of wood-grain or faille moiré.

Our designs are intended to express the unique capabilities of 3d printing and are only possible to produce through this technology.

We often prototype with our desktop 3d printer. However, due to the high cost of professional quality machinery, we currently partner with dedicated fabricators to produce all items we offer for sale.
